Two original band members, John Frusciante’s favourite guitarist, and one of the fiercest saxophonists in contemporary jazz – this is the recipe for a high-calorie jazz punk treat that’s sure to fill the concert-shaped hole in the hearts of all Fugazi fans!
FOR FANS OF: Fugazi, Fire!, The Necks…
The Messthetics formed just under a decade ago when Joe Lally and Brendan Canty, the original rhythm section of the now-defunct and highly influential band Fugazi, started jamming together again — partly for fun, partly for real. When they invited Anthony Pirog to join them — a genre-defying guitar virtuoso whom John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers) has named his favourite guitarist — they quickly realised that everything simply clicked.
The newly formed instrumental trio wowed another Fugazi legend, Ian MacKaye, who released their first two albums on his Dischord label. Both were met with acclaim across the musical spectrum, from punk to jazz, and proved that the impenetrable Fugazi chemistry of bass and drums is alive and well — even when it’s jazz-rock riffs roaring above it.
The Messthetics reached new heights when saxophonist James Brandon Lewis joined them as a special guest at one of their concerts. The trio recognised a kindred spirit in one of today's most piercing jazz talents, renowned for his fearless sound and explosive compositions. Last year, they released the excellent album The Messthetics and James Brandon Lewis, which glides fluidly across genres, avoiding clichés and showcasing the mutual respect among these four masters. This July, we’ll get to hear them live in Ljubljana.
Samokres is a band from the Gorizia region whose music blends timeless riffs, energetically grooving arrangements, and playful dynamics, rooted in psychedelia, progressive, and alternative rock. Their sound draws from the history of guitar music but approaches it in a modern, cross-genre way, with a strong focus on live performance. In 2024, they introduced themselves with their first live recording Live From The Rehearsal Room and toured across Slovenia as part of Radio Študent’s Klubski Maraton tour. They’re currently working on their debut album.
